Internet addiction
The Internet is one of the main forms of media that has changed our way of learning. It is the liveliest manifestation of globalization and digitalization of communicational, social, and economic processes in the 21st century. Its unique features like easy access, permanent availability, ease of use, low price of using, anonymity of the users and the like make it highly popular all around the world. While, according to Stats website, there were only 360 million Internet users in the world in 2000, this number reached 2200 million users by 2011. Asia has the highest growth rate of Internet users followed by Europe, North America, and South America. In terms of the number of Internet users, Iran is the 13th in the world and the 1st in the Middle East. Only over the past four years, the number of Internet users in Iran has increased by 25 times. Forty percent of internet users in Iran are at age range 20-29. The Internet penetration rate in Iranian youth and students is notable. The factors effective in internet dependency in students are a new experience of freedom without parents’ control, no activity tracking in online world, the typical depression of student life, desire to have deep and effective relationships, promotion of using the Internet by educational organizations, individual’s desire to feel identity stability, social isolation, and anonymity in online world among many. Along with these, lack of knowledge about the proper ways of using the Internet and the attractions of the Internet along with one’s characteristics intensify the excessive use of the Internet so that some individuals may even develop addiction. The negative and destructive outcomes of Internet addition in social and cultural fields are undeniable. Abnormal use of the Internet is described by different terms like excessive mental occupation and inability to control desires and behaviors about using the Internet that leads to disorders in different aspects of life. Internet dependency degrades performance in different areas of health, career, emotions, morals, and culture. Studies conducted between 2014 and 2015 have estimated the prevalence of Internet addiction from 1% to 18.7% and about one half of these studies have supported a high prevalence rate in men. Recent studies in different countries have reported Internet addiction in students in 5.5% - 44.6% range.
